The Denver Broncos are all set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in what should be an enthralling Week 6 of Monday Night Football. Entering this AFC West clash, both teams have struggled early on. But it's the Chargers who are currently enjoying a better run of form.
Coming off wins in Week 5 and Week 4, the Chargers sit second in a highly competitive division that features the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders as well. Denver, on the other hand, is currently third in their division with a 2-3 record, with their most recent defeat coming back in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.
Last season, both teams won a game apiece when facing off against each other. This time around though, the Chargers will have to deal with the threat of the self-professed "Mr. Unlimited" Russell Wilson.
The Denver Broncos, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, meet the Los Angeles Chargers, led by quarterback Justin Herbert, in an NFL Week 6 AFC West matchup on Monday, October 17, 2022 (10/17/2022) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The Broncos (2-3) are in desperate need of a win after dropping its last two games. Even more, Denver needs its offense to look functional for 60 minutes. It was anything but in Week 5’s 12-9 overtime loss/field goal fest against the Colts. After a good effort in Week 4, Russell Wilson regressed against Indianapolis, throwing a couple of bonehead interceptions and either missing or simply not seeing open receivers. And in their first full game without RB Javonte Williams, the Broncos’ ground game — led by Melvin Gordon and Mike Boone — gained 92 yards on 22 carries. Each man caught three passes and had at least 40 receiving yards.
The Chargers (3-2) tallied at least 30 points in Weeks 4 and 5, resulting in victories. Those efforts pushed Los Angeles’ offense into the league’s top 10 in points and yards. The defense, however, needs some work as it currently ranks 30th in scoring. Quarterback Justin Herbert produced multiple passing scores or 300 yards in each of the team’s first four games, but he took a little bit of a backseat to RB Austin Ekeler in Week 5. Ekeler rushed for 173 yards on just 16 carries versus the Browns and scored twice. Ekeler also had two touchdowns when these AFC West rivals last met in Week 18 of the 2021 season.
The Broncos (2-3) are coming off one of their ugliest losses of the season, falling 12-9 in overtime to the Colts on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 5. Denver posted just three field goals as Russell Wilson continued to underwhelm in his first season in a new uniform.
Wilson threw two interceptions in the loss, one of which came in the red zone with the game tied late in the fourth quarter. He will need to be much sharper than he has been in the first five weeks for Denver to defeat a much tougher Chargers team on the road.
Los Angeles (3-2) enters the contest on a two-game winning streak. Justin Herbert looks to almost fully recovered from a rib injury and Austin Ekeler is hitting his groove.
After two straight losses, the Broncos (2-3) look to return to .500 with a Week 6 road game against the Chargers (3-2), the winners of two straight, on "Monday Night Football."
Each team has been dealing with significant injuries to key players, and for the Broncos, the worst of them have largely been on offense. Quarterback Russell Wilson has been dealing with a shoulder injury, and tackle Garett Bolles and running back Javonte Williams are both done for the year after season-ending injuries. Wilson & Co. will have to move forward with the challenge of improving even in spite of losing some of their best players, as the offense has struggled to find the end zone in recent weeks.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, has placed Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa and tackle Rashawn Slater on injured reserve, and their quarterback, Justin Herbert, has been playing through a ribs injury. Still, Herbert has some of the league's best weapons at his disposal in running back Austin Ekeler and wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, though Allen has not played since Week 1 due to injury. Williams has played well in Allen's absence, with 100-plus receiving yards in three of his past four games, and star cornerback Pat Surtain II will likely have the task of limiting him on Monday.
There have been so many self inflicted wounds through the first five games that its impossible to list them all. I’m sure you are all well aware of the issues with penalties, play calling, drops, turnovers, and clock management. If this team starts getting out of its own way, they could be good enough to win some games here. That shift has to start this week if they are to keep their playoff aspirations alive and well heading into the next phase of the regular season.
