See Less Canadiens' Juraj Slafkovsky: Logs season-high ice time in loss Slafkovsky was plus-1 over 12:41 of ice time in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Washington. By design, the 18-year-old Slafkovsky's been kept under wraps early in the start of his NHL career. Saturday's TOI was the highest over the first three games, but he's yet to get work on the power play and saddled on the third line. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis is comfortable with that for now, Marc Antoine Godin of The Athletic reports. St. Louis wants to integrate the man-sized forward slowly without undue expectations and learn the five-on-five game. The coach noted he had more puck touches Saturday, which is an important part of Slafkovsky's development.
It's unknown if that development will continue at the NHL level, or if the organization decides AHL Laval is the best environment for Slafkovsky.... See Less Canadiens' Arber Xhekaj: Logs first NHL point Xhekaj had an assist, three hits and three blocked shots over 15:05 of ice time in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Washington. Xhekaj's shot from the point was blocked in front of goalie Darcy Kuemper, but Nick Suzuki retrieved the puck and spun for a wraparound goal. Xhekaj's one of several young defensemen playing a larger-than-expected role.
Harris has averaged 20:35 TOI while skating on the second pair with Johnny Kovacevic.... See Less Canadiens' Arber Xhekaj: Logs six hits in loss Xhekaj recorded two shots on net, six hits, three blocked shots and two PIM in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Red Wings. Xhekaj (pronounced Jack-Eye) is one of the inexperienced blueliners the Canadiens are using with both Joel Edmundson (lower body) and Mike Matheson (abdomen) unavailable to start the season.
Harris, who played the 12th game of his NHL career, is one of several young defensemen playing significant roles on Montreal's blue line due to injuries to Joel Edmundson (lower body) and Mike Matheson (abdomen). He had an assist in Wednesday's season-opening win over Toronto and is second on the team with eight shots, behind only Cole Caufield (nine).
The days of Gallagher being a first-line staple in Montreal are behind him, but the 30-year-old winger still gets minutes on the second-unit power play.... See Less Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Briefly leaves Friday Guhle left Friday's 3-0 loss to the Red Wings midway through the first period but returned in the second period, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports. Guhle, who skated on the top pair with David Savard, was rubbed out along the boards by Detroit's Oskar Sundqvist and missed the latter half the first period. It's the last thing the Canadiens needed; Montreal is down two veteran blueliners in Joel Edmundson (lower body) and Mike Matheson (abdomen) to start the season. Those injuries mean relatively inexperienced defensemen like Guhle, who had 22:24 TOI in Wednesday's season opener, take on larger roles....
The 6-foot-4 defenseman has thrown around his body with 10 hits and four blocked shots over the first two games of his NHL career.... See Less Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher: Skating on third line Gallagher had three shots on net, one blocked shot and a minus-2 rating over 14:20 of ice time in Friday's 3-0 loss to Detroit. Gallagher opened the season on the third line with Christian Dvorak and rookie Juraj Slafkovsky.
See Less Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Loses in season debut Montembeault made 26 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Capitals on Saturday. It was Montembeault's season debut. The good news was Alex Ovechkin went 0-for-6 on his shot attempts. The bad news was Conor Sheary scored on a tip-in, T. J. Oshie jammed in a rebound and Anthony Mantha deflected one in off Montembeault.... See Less Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Starting Saturday Oct 15, 2022 Montembeault will start Saturday's road game versus Washington. Montembeault will make his season debut after Jake Allen started the first two games of the year.
